“I have seen the Industry grow from very humble and inexperienced beginnings in the 70s to what is today a very professional industry. Industry associations have injected training and professionalism to help identify Australian swimming pool builders as being among the best pool water container constructors in the World. However this construction expertise has not necessarily carried over to the equally important aspects of water treatment and hydraulics”.

“In the absence of Apprenticeship training for pool equipment installers, such as for electricians & plumbers etc., the industry has simply evolved in the essential area of efficient pool operation to where we can find some builders with 20 years experience in construction merely having 1 years experience 20 times over in water treatment and hydraulics”.

As an electrical contractor since 1961 Don Bullock was a Foundation Director of the Housing Industry Association of Queensland in 1965, and first introduced salt chlorinators to Queensland in 1973.

In about 1980 he acquired a small pool shop on Gold Coast's Chevron Island and by 1988 had expanded the one shop to 9 shops and several franchises with sales exceeding $10m per year when he and a partner sold out to a public company.

He was President of the Queensland Swimming Pools Association (now SPASA) from 1982 to 1984 and was a Foundation Director on the newly formed SPASA National body from its inauguration to 1989.
